NOWHERE: Helping Wildlife Cope With Habitat Loss and Fencing in Urban and Suburban Settings

After a bit of a delay due to unfortunate circumstances we are pleased to announce the release of the latest title by August E. Allen,  NOWHERE.  Though this title boasts extensive artwork throughout the book, we recommend a minimum reading age of twelve.

And with no further ado we offer the synopsis below the striking cover art. Thanks for stopping by!

Set aside your anthropocentric lens — observe the relentless expansion of the urban footprint through the eyes of the animals.

With cover to cover illustrations as stunning as they are compelling, Allen depicts the myriad of hardships wildlife must face when living in a human-dominated world. A world of fences, concrete, and asphalt. A world where water is scarce, accessing critical habitat — a thing of the past.

Allen contends, however, that it doesn’t have to be this way. With civic engagement it is possible for a wide variety of species to coexist in a metropolitan area.

Though urbanization often results in habitat loss or fragmentation, cities can play a key role in the preservation and stewardship of species and habitat. To that end, we can all make room for wildlife and help restore biodiversity through simple changes and modifications within our cities, our communities, and within our own yards. From providing water sources, planting native plants, and adding habitat, to using your political right to lobby for careful urban planning that prioritizes biodiversity, creates spaces for wildlife and areas for green corridors, we can all help mitigate the negative impact of urban and suburban expansion on natural plant and animal communities.

Creating biodiverse urban landscapes that do not hinder wildlife movement should be our primary objective; rather than making room for wildlife on the margins of our urban existence we should engage in accommodating a wide variety of species within our own communities.

After all, this land is their land too.
